Monitoring of Cockatoo Nesting Boxes - Volunteer Alice Anderson
“I have always had a keen interest in nature and in my past life worked as a librarian with the Natural History Museum in Durban, South Africa, and as a volunteer at the WA Museum.
Volunteering with the Friends of Meelup Regional Park has given me the opportunity to pursue this interest with a group of knowledgeable, friendly, and like-minded people.
A project I am currently involved in is the monitoring of cockatoo nesting boxes. These have been installed to encourage these birds to nest in trees in the park. Isobel and I await results in the breeding season with bated breath!
I look forward to our weekly Meelup Park activities and enjoy getting exercise outdoors in the most beautiful, peaceful surroundings. A bonus of volunteering is the satisfaction one gets from contributing to the preservation of such a valuable natural environment for posterity”.
Survey of Soil Erosion and Track Maintenance - Tony Smurthwaite
“Over five-months during 2017 I carried out a geological survey of soil erosion and track maintenance in the Meelup Regional Park. Tracks are crucial for access to the Park and for facilitating the protection of its vegetation and habitats from fire, soil erosion, plant diseases, feral animals, and illegal activities. Their regular maintenance ensures that people who come to the park are safe and able to enjoy the visual amenity and recreational opportunities.
I have gained great satisfaction (and I learnt a lot) from assessing the condition of the trails and using my skills as a geologist to assist in the management of the Park”.
